Elie G. Aoun, M.D., M.R.O., is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University - Division of Law, Medicine and Psychiatry. He is a quadruple board certified psychiatrist and certified medical review officer currently licensed in New York and in California practicing in downtown New York City. Dr. Aoun trained in general psychiatry at Brown University, in addiction psychiatry at the University of California in San Francisco and in forensic psychiatry at the combined Columbia University and Cornell University program. He has additional expertise in neuro-psycho-endocrinology and psychotherapy. (Full Resume).

 

In his private practice, Dr. Aoun provides diagnostic evaluations including second opinions, treatment for psychiatric disorders using psychotherapy (talk therapy), medication management (psychopharmacology), and forensic evaluations for civil and criminal litigation (including serving as an expert witness).

 

Dr. Aoun is an experienced clinician, educator, researcher, advocate and public policy consultant. His mission is to provide evidence based, culturally informed, patient centered psychiatric services. He is the recipient of numerous prominent honors and awards, was a speaker at several local, national and international professional meetings, and has authored and published multiple book chapters, policy papers, position statements, journal articles and scientific papers in prestigious peer reviewed journals. His work has been cited in the popular press, scientific journals, policy documents and amicus curiae briefs.

 

Dr. Aoun has received advanced training in psychotherapy (psychodynamic therapy – Kohutian self-psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, interpersonal psychotherapy and supportive psychotherapy), psychopharmacology and forensic evaluations.

 

Dr. Aoun is appointed vice-chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s council on addiction psychiatry, co-chairs the workgroup on civil commitment for substance use disorders, is associate-chair for the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry scientific and program committee and co-chairs the forensics committee. He also serves on the American Academy of Psychiatry and the law judicial action committee and government affairs committee.
